Corrections / Redos
Can I redo that?
Short answer: Yes Long answer: I prefer corrections, not resets. Please use the corrections template, corrections google form, schedule a live lesson, call me, or send a webmail to improve on anything and everything. Students may redo or add to portfolios/activities/essays at any time to improve their grade by incorporating teacher feedback to better meet objectives. Please send via webmail all portfolio / activity / essay corrections. Students may use the template below to improve on quizzes / tests by describing WHY their original choice is incorrect and WHY the correct choice is the better answer, or identify where it is in the lessons. Please send via webmail this template, labeled with the question(s) you are correcting, to improve your grade on objective question types. Can I get a reset? I generally don't do resets. There are some exceptions, like if your power goes out mid-test or you get temporarily abducted by aliens so your test times out. Taking the same exact questions over again, however, does not accurately assess where you are at. It is better to correct the questions by explaining the why. Plus, why would you want to do the whole test over again instead of just the ones you missed? |
You can continue to make improvements all quarter. This is one of many reasons it's good to finish early; then work with your teachers to get your grades to where you want them to be.

What about AI? (Predictive AI / Generative AI / ChatGPT / Dall-E, etcetera)??
I will be selectively offering the opportunity to use AI for certain activities in class, but in general this should only be used in the same way as other online resources. A tool to develop your understanding. You may use it to further your own understanding, but you may not present it's responses as your original work.
1) You must cite any usage of AI tools when used for researching. The proper format is AItool.(Date).Inquiry/Question(s).[Response to user question]. For example:
ChatGPT. (2023, September 20). Why Should We Study Economics. [Response to user question].
Please see Purdue's OWL for more information or guidelines: https://guides.lib.purdue.edu/c.php?g=1371380&p=10135074
2) You must be aware that GenAI tools are being developed at an incredible pace. Though promising, genAI tools may be inaccurate, inefficient, or biased. GenAI outputs may come from questionable sources: a network of unknown and known genAI tools, sources that limit or remove human credit, sources that limit or remove pay to humans, etc. It is critical to interrogate both genAI inputs and outputs so as to comply with ethical and legal standards.
3) Just like any other resources, you should synthesize information from various perspectives to get the best understanding. You may need to ask AI multiple questions before you start to understand. It can be very important to build a fundamental understanding of concepts and terms so you can think critically, before passively accepting whatever AI tells you, or you will not be able to know when there is bias or inaccuracy.

Is there a best way to take NOTES?
Notes are for your personal reference and learning, so they may look different to each student. If you would like a time tested method for note-taking, I personally prefer the Cornell Method of Note Taking. You can download the template below as often as you like to use in class! You may use your personal notes on assessments in my classes. You may submit your personal notes for each unit for sample work credit.

Temporary *0's
Temporary 0's are easy to spot from your Grade Book and look like this: 0*
I typically add temporary 0's each Monday for any assessments that were due the Friday before. Temporary zeros are added to a student’s gradebook to assist in providing students and Caretakers with the most accurate picture of their academic standing.
When looking at a student’s gradebook, the letter grade may give a false sense of accomplishment if the grade is high and yet the percentage of completion is low. For example, if a student’s grade is an “A”, but they only have 2% of the work completed when there should be 30% of the work completed, the “A” is not an accurate indicator of the student’s academic performance. When temporary zeros are entered, the resulting grade is that which a student would be earning at that particular point in time based on the work completion thus far when following the planner.
Temporary 0's will not impact your ability to complete these assessments. You may still submit them like normal when completing these lessons.
In addition, you have no sequence control in my courses! Therefore, it is okay to move ahead or come back to things as you prefer. Temporary 0's will then help show you the weight of important assessments as well. Examining these weights with the lowest average is the best way to identify ways to improve your grades. It will not be helpful for you to submit placeholders or blanks as that will only temporarily remove a score from your grade and would return to a zero, but make it harder to re-submit at a later time. Instead, move past any problems you're having and get help from me to submit!
Mr. Thrower will add temporary 0's weekly (every Monday-ish).
